ISO 10087:2022 Standard

ISO 10087:2022 (Fifth Edition, January 2022) establishes a coding system to achieve identification of any small craft up to 24m hull length in terms of country code, manufacturer code, serial number, manufacture date, and model year.

Coverage Includes:
  • ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2 country code specification (Clause 4.2)
  • Manufacturer identification code requirements (Clause 4.3)
  • Serial number format and restrictions (Clause 4.4)
  • Month and year of manufacture coding (Clause 4.5)
  • Model year designation principles
  • Character size requirements - minimum 6mm height (Clause 5.1)
  • Permanency of marking specifications (Clause 5.2)
  • Location requirements for all craft types (Clause 5.3)
  • Duplicate identification number requirements (Clause 5.4)
  • Display format specifications (Clause 5.6)

Craft Type Location Requirements

ISO 10087:2022 Clause 5.3 specifies different WIN placement requirements based on vessel configuration:

Craft Type Primary Location Special Requirements
Monohull with Transom Starboard side of transom Within 50mm of transom top/gunwale/hull-deck joint
Monohull without Transom Within 300mm of stern Starboard side where practical
Catamaran (Permanent Hulls) Starboard hull Transom or within 50mm of stern
Catamaran (Detachable Hulls) Both hulls Each hull requires marking
Catamaran (Removable Hulls) Aft cross-beam Within 300mm of starboard hull attachment
Trimaran Centre hull only Starboard side of transom or near stern
Inflatable Boat Rigid aft cross-beam or motor bracket Within 300mm of starboard hull. Alternative: console if obscured

Model Year Concept

The model year represents the year when the specific craft is intended to be placed on the market. This is a 12-month period that can extend across two calendar years, determined by the manufacturer's marketing strategy.

Model Year Examples:
  • A craft manufactured in November 2025 (coded K5) could have model year 25 or 26
  • If marketed as a 2025 model, the WIN ends with: K525
  • If marketed as a 2026 model, the WIN ends with: K526
  • The manufacturer decides which calendar year is designated as the model year
  • This allows manufacturers to introduce "next year" models before the calendar year changes

Month Coding Reference

January=A, February=B, March=C, April=D, May=E, June=F, July=G, August=H, September=I, October=J, November=K, December=L

European Market Registration

For craft to be placed on the European market under Directive 2013/53/EU, the Manufacturer Identification Code (MIC) must be registered with a European entity according to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1 of 3 January 2017.

Registration Requirements:
  • MIC must be unique and assigned by authorized entity
  • Required for compliance with EU Directive 2013/53/EU
  • Applies to all recreational craft placed on European market
  • Registration must occur before craft manufacturing begins
  • Separate from ISO 10087:2022 requirements but complementary
